"Using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model for inflammation and host-pathogen interactions."
Assistant Professor of Biology Con Sullivan
November 20, 2019 from Noon to 1 PM
北京快3代理 Augusta: Katz 40, Bangor: Lewiston 118, and Zoom: 628276740

Abstract: Vertebrate animal models have provided critical answers to some of biomedicine’s most pressing questions. With the genomic revolution, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) has gained prominence as one of the principal model systems in biomedical research. Zebrafish are particularly attractive because their fertilization and development is external, each mating pair can produce hundreds of embryos per breeding, and their development as embryos and larvae is easily observed due to their optical clarity. In addition, they exhibit significant sequence and functional conservation with the human genome, and they are amenable to an array of forward and reverse genetics tools and techniques that allow for the manipulation and study of the genome. My research has focused on using the zebrafish as a model for inflammation and host-pathogen interactions. In my Research and Pedagogy presentation, I will discuss my experiences with the zebrafish model system and will describe my current work using zebrafish to model the immune response to influenza A infections.
My current zebrafish research is supported by an NIH 1R15AI131202-01A1 research grant and by a University of Maine at Augusta Presidential Strategic Development Funding (2019-2020) award.
